Inaugural PDX Chapter Meeting Summary

Posted:

Yesterday evening, September 14th, 28 Portland-area wild fish advocates gathered at the Hawthorne location of Gigantic Brewing for the inaugural NFS PDX Chapter meeting. Attendees got to know each other over good beer and food and shared some of the topics that they are most interested in exploring in more depth at future meetings.

Here's a brief summary of the key points discussed:

  • Hatchery-wild communications with people outside the angling community. Tom Alkire, current member of the Oregon Hatchery Research Center (OHRC) board, brought up an upcoming opportunity to join the OHRC board as a Sport Angler Representative. If you think you might be interested in pursuing that position, visit this link for more information, and then let us know if you apply so that we can support your application.

  • Water rights and instream water management.

  • Advocacy and testimony. Creating compelling testimony for policymakers, such as at ODFW Commission meetings.

In addition, Washington Coordinator, J. Michelle Swope, is recruiting volunteers for the fourth year of spawning surveys on the White Salmon River. If you weren’t able to make the meeting, but you’d like to volunteer with J. Michelle, please sign up for training on either October 28 or 29 using this form. If you can’t make either of those training days, then please reach out to J. Michelle directly at jmichelle@nativefishsociety.org so she can set up an individual training for you.

Lastly, whether you were in attendance or not, we’d love to hear your thoughts on where and when future PDX Chapter meetings should take place, so please fill out this short survey!

The energy and enthusiasm displayed at our inaugural meeting were truly inspiring. We are excited about the future and the impact we can make together as a community of wild fish advocates. A huge thank you to all those who attended our inaugural PDX Chapter Meeting - and for those who couldn't make it, stay tuned for more information on upcoming opportunities in the Portland area!
