Locals Stand Up for Wild Rivers & Native Fish
Hunter Creek, Oregon - Last night was another inspiring public hearing. Our River Stewards and staff really appreciate everyone who came to the Brookings-Harbor High School Auditorium for the mineral withdrawal hearing and we especially cherish your support and activism. We'd like to give a special thanks to our friend Ann Vileisis at the Kalmiopsis Audubon Chapter for all of her organizing help!
The hearing was steeply favored in support for the 20-year mineral withdrawal and there were many compelling and heartfelt testimonies. Approximately 350 people attended with the vast majority wearing blue to symbolize the clean water and native fish that we are fighting to protect.
More than a hundred of our neighbors and friends signed up to to speak and the vast majority were in support of the action needed to protect our communities from the threats of nickel strip mining. We especially appreciated the diversity of the public comment. People traveled all the way from from Cave Junction, Pistol River, Gasquet, Hiouchi, Crescent City, Gold Beach, Port Orford, and other communities that would be affected by the three proposed strip mines.
Way to go people of southern Oregon and Northern California! You inspire us to keep fighting the good fight to help protect our wild rivers and native fish from strip mining.
