The Native Fish Society is seeking a Willamette Valley District Coordinator

Posted:

Position Overview

The Native Fish Society (NFS) is a nonprofit organization based in Oregon City, Oregon. Guided by the best available science, Native Fish Society advocates for the recovery of wild, native fish and promotes the stewardship of the habitats that sustain them. NFS believes that no effort for wild fish protection and recovery is stronger or more effective than those initiated and sustained by local communities. To that end, much of the NFS mission is fulfilled through its signature River Steward Program, which features 88 river stewards safeguarding over 4,000 river miles and 100,000 square miles of watersheds throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and northern California.

River Stewards are a grassroots, all-volunteer conservation network throughout the Pacific Northwest that help solve the root causes of fish decline and stop threats before they happen. These local advocates are the boots on the ground voices for wild, native fish in their homewaters. In the past year our stewards have mobilized federal agencies to undertake habitat restoration, protected Oregon’s essential salmon habitat from suction dredge mining, and helped to designate wild fish sanctuaries throughout the Pacific Northwest.

As our River Steward program has expanded we have added District Coordinators to lead our local grassroots advocates in their campaigns. The Native Fish Society is now seeking a Willamette Valley District Coordinator to organize our efforts advocating for Bull Trout and Spring Chinook reintroduction to the North Santiam River. The coordinator will also work on other ongoing projects in support of the River Steward Program including work in the Molalla, McKenzie, Clackamas, and other Willamette tributaries.

The Willamette Valley District Coordinator will be hired by the Native Fish Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as a contract position. This grant-contingent contract position is currently funded for one year with potential for renewal upon availability of further funding and performance.

The duties of the Willamette Valley District Coordinator include:

  • Lead efforts in the Willamette District as they pertain to the organizational strategic plan.
    • Initiate campaign on the reintroduction of Bull Trout and Spring Chinook to the North Santiam Watershed.

  • Reporting to the River Steward Program Director on a monthly basis regarding the latest activities and work accomplished.
  • Run an action alert to call for agencies to meet recovery deadlines
